Getting Started With Mason Jar Hydroponics
So here is a lettuce seedling started in a Root Riot starter plug.
A 3-inch net pot will fit perfectly inside your quart mason jar. If you don’t have a mason jar a quart mayonnaise jar should work too.
You can grow just about any greens in a mason jar so don’t limit yourself to lettuce. Just don’t try this with a tomato plant.
Mason jar hydroponics has its limitations. The idea is for the plant to be done at the same time all the nutrient solution is used up.
As the plant grows and the nutrient solution drops and the roots exposed above it supply the plant with oxygen. If you add more solution up to the top again the plant might suffocate.
If the plant is not done yet you can try adding some more nutrient solution but it might not work.
How To Grow Kratky Lettuce In A Mason Jar
I covered my jar with tin foil. You don’t have to do this but I was concerned about algae growing inside the jar.
You will want to fill the jar so the nutrient solution is almost to the top of your net pot. The water level will start to drop as the plant grows.
Growing Lettuce In A Storage Tote
As I mentioned you could use a tote to do this and grow multiple plants at once. It takes up more space than a mason jar and won’t fit on a windowsill either.
You might want to start out using a mason jar and then try using a tote later. It is not hard but it is a slightly more complicated project.
