Plus, it’s a heading lettuce, forming a nice, compact head rather than a loose bunch of leaves.
Setting Up the AeroGarden
Setting up the AeroGarden is a breeze with the easy instructions. Just plug it in and fill the reservoir add baskets and sponges and you’re good to go.
I ditched the standard baskets and sponges and opted for root riot plugs. They’re fantastic for seed germination.
They have a planting hole right on top so you can plant any different seeds you want instead of the preseeded sponges AeroGarden offers.
When it comes to filling the water reservoir, just fill it right up to the line marked Fill to Here. Easy peasy!

But remember, not all seeds have the same germination rate, and some seeds like peppers can take up to 2 weeks so it’s always good to have a backup plan.
Managing the Growth

You can remove lower leaves as they grow so they continue to head up or you can harvest the entire plant all at once.
And as they grow, I’ll thin them out, probably leaving just two in the end. To keep the light out of the unused slots I covered them with some black duct tape. It’s a simple trick that works wonders.

Now, let’s talk nutrients. I’ve switched to using Jack’s 3-2-1 fertilizer instead of the AeroGarden’s own mix once I ran out.
In my experience, it’s just as good, if not better. I keep the nutrient levels around 500-600 parts per million, and my plants are thriving.
